Astypalaia is a seasonal island. The difference between visiting in mid-June and visiting in late August is enormous — not just in weather, but in atmosphere, availability, and what the island feels like. We have watched this island through 25 summers. Here is what each month is actually like.

✅ Our recommendation: June or September

Both months offer warm air (23-26°C), warm sea (22-24°C), full sunshine, all restaurants and boat trips operating — but without the crowds of peak July-August. In June the island is still waking up. In September it is winding down beautifully. Both are ideal.

🌬 The wind factor — the most important thing to know

Astypalaia is one of the windier islands in the Aegean. The Meltemi (northerly wind) blows consistently in July and August — sometimes very strongly. This affects: ferry schedules (cancellations happen), sea conditions (some boat trips impossible), and the feel of the beach. The wind is not always unpleasant — it keeps the heat bearable — but it is real. June and September typically have milder wind conditions.

Very little
Do not visit unless you have a very specific reason. Most tavernas, shops and tourist facilities are closed. Ferry service is reduced to 1-2 times per week. The island is beautiful in winter light but there is almost nothing to do. Flights operate very infrequently.

The island is green and beautiful after winter. Wildflowers cover the hillsides. But most restaurants are still closed, boat trips are not yet running, and ferry connections are still limited. Not recommended for a beach holiday. Good for walking and photography if you are flexible.

May is improving but not yet fully operational. Some cafés and tavernas are open; many are not. Boat trips to Kounoupa may not yet be running. No crowds at all. The weather is pleasant for exploring. If you go in May, expect that some places you want to visit may be closed — call ahead.
  • ✅ No crowds, low prices
  • ⚠️ Many restaurants and beach bars still closed
  • ⚠️ Boat trips may not yet be available

June is the hidden sweet spot. By mid-June everything is open. The weather is warm (occasionally very hot), the sea is swimmable, boat trips are running, all restaurants are in operation. And the island is quiet. In mid-June 2024, one German travel writer found that "weather was fantastic" but "there were hardly any holidaymakers on site." Perfect.
  • ✅ All facilities open by mid-June
  • ✅ Lowest crowds of the full season
  • ✅ Great value — prices rise in July
  • ✅ Mild wind conditions
  • ⚠️ Sea slightly cooler (22°C) — still perfectly swimmable

July is warm, fully operational, and busier than June but still manageable until late July when Greek families arrive for their summer holidays. Ferries and flights fill up. The Meltemi wind starts to pick up. Still a great month to visit if you book accommodation and vehicles well in advance.
  • ✅ Hot, sunny, everything open
  • ✅ Long days (14h sunshine)
  • ⚠️ Book everything well ahead
  • ⚠️ Wind can be strong
  • ⚠️ Higher prices than June
🔥August

Highest
August is the peak month — the warmest sea, the longest days, but also the busiest. Greek families take their summer holidays here, boat trips fill weeks in advance, vehicle rental availability is tight. That said, "crowded" on Astypalaia still means far less crowded than any comparable Greek island. The island is not Mykonos.
  • ✅ Warmest sea of the year (28°C)
  • ✅ Most lively atmosphere
  • ✅ 15 August festival at the castle — not to be missed if you are here
  • ⚠️ Book everything 2-3 months ahead minimum
  • ⚠️ Strong Meltemi wind common
  • ⚠️ Highest prices of the year
  • ⚠️ Ferry and flight cancellations more likely due to wind
🌅September
🏆 Best month

24–25°C

Crowds
Low
September is our personal favourite month on this island. The sea is at its warmest (24-25°C — warmer than June). The crowds have gone. Everything is still open. The light is different — golden and softer. The Meltemi has calmed. Prices drop. You can get a table at any restaurant without booking.
  • ✅ Warmest sea of the year alongside August
  • ✅ Far fewer people than July-August
  • ✅ All restaurants and facilities still open (usually)
  • ✅ Lowest prices for accommodation
  • ✅ Milder wind
  • ⚠️ Some beach bars may close mid-September
🍂October
Late season
Temperature
20–22°C
Sea
22–23°C
Sunshine
8h/day
Crowds
Very low
October is the final month of the season. The weather is still pleasant and the sea remains warm enough to swim. However, establishments begin to close progressively through the month. By end of October, only a handful of year-round places remain open. Good for solitude; less good if you want choice of restaurants and activities.
  • ✅ Very quiet, low prices
  • ✅ Sea still warm
  • ⚠️ Many places closing through the month
  • ⚠️ Reduced ferry and flight frequency

Quick answer: when to go based on your priorities

🏆 Best overall: June (mid) or September

Full season in operation, warm sea, warm air, minimal crowds. The island at its best.

👨‍👩‍👧 Best for families: Late June or early September

School holidays typically start late June. Sea warm enough for children. Not too hot. Not too crowded.

💑 Best for couples: September

The quiet September atmosphere, long warm evenings, golden light. The island is the most romantic when the crowds have gone.

⚠️ August: book everything 2-3 months ahead

Rental vehicles, accommodation, ferry tickets with a car — all need to be booked very early. Do not leave it until you arrive or you will be disappointed.

Planning your visit?Book your vehicle early.

July and August vehicles sell out weeks in advance. June and September are easier but still worth booking ahead. Flexible cancellation up to 7 days before.
