Astypalaia is a seasonal island. The difference between visiting in mid-June and visiting in late August is enormous — not just in weather, but in atmosphere, availability, and what the island feels like. We have watched this island through 25 summers. Here is what each month is actually like.
✅ Our recommendation: June or September
Both months offer warm air (23-26°C), warm sea (22-24°C), full sunshine, all restaurants and boat trips operating — but without the crowds of peak July-August. In June the island is still waking up. In September it is winding down beautifully. Both are ideal.
🌬 The wind factor — the most important thing to know
Astypalaia is one of the windier islands in the Aegean. The Meltemi (northerly wind) blows consistently in July and August — sometimes very strongly. This affects: ferry schedules (cancellations happen), sea conditions (some boat trips impossible), and the feel of the beach. The wind is not always unpleasant — it keeps the heat bearable — but it is real. June and September typically have milder wind conditions.

Quick answer: when to go based on your priorities
🏆 Best overall: June (mid) or September
Full season in operation, warm sea, warm air, minimal crowds. The island at its best.
👨👩👧 Best for families: Late June or early September
School holidays typically start late June. Sea warm enough for children. Not too hot. Not too crowded.
💑 Best for couples: September
The quiet September atmosphere, long warm evenings, golden light. The island is the most romantic when the crowds have gone.
⚠️ August: book everything 2-3 months ahead
Rental vehicles, accommodation, ferry tickets with a car — all need to be booked very early. Do not leave it until you arrive or you will be disappointed.
Planning your visit?Book your vehicle early.
July and August vehicles sell out weeks in advance. June and September are easier but still worth booking ahead. Flexible cancellation up to 7 days before.
