Do you need a rental vehicle in Astypalaia? Yes — almost certainly. The island has one main road connecting Chora to Maltezana, a small bus that runs only a few times a day between the main villages, and a handful of taxis. If you want to reach any of the best beaches, you will need your own transport. Here is everything you need to know.
🔑 The short answer
- For Chora, Livadi, Pera Gialos: no vehicle needed — walk everywhere
- For Maltezana, Steno, Agios Konstantinos: any car or scooter
- For Vatses, Kaminakia, Vathy (dirt roads): 4WD required
- For the Kounoupa boat trip: no vehicle — departs from port
- Best all-round choice: Suzuki Jimny or Dacia Duster for 4-5 days
Do you actually need to rent a vehicle?
Astypalaia is 97 square kilometres — large enough that you cannot walk everywhere, but small enough that you can drive from one end to the other in about 90 minutes on the main road. The public bus connects Chora with Livadi, Pera Gialos and (seasonally) Maltezana — but only 4-5 times per day and not to most beaches.
If you are staying in Chora and plan to spend your time in the castle, the windmills, the village, and the nearby beaches of Livadi and Pera Gialos — you can manage without a vehicle. But if you want to see any of the beaches that make Astypalaia special (Vatses, Kaminakia, Vathy, Blue Harbour), a rental vehicle is essential.

Driving in Astypalaia — practical tips
The basics
- Drive on the right — Greece drives on the right side of the road.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on roads. In practice, most island roads require much slower speeds due to bends and road conditions.
- Petrol stations: There is one main petrol station near Chora. Fill up before heading to the west side or east side — there are no other petrol stations on the island.
- Parking: Plentiful and free at all beaches and attractions. Mostly unpaved but perfectly adequate.
- No toll roads, no motorways — just one main road and a network of smaller roads and dirt tracks.
The main road (Chora–Maltezana)
The primary tarmac road connecting Chora to Maltezana is well-maintained and runs through dramatic mountain scenery with sea views on both sides. The drive takes 20-25 minutes and is itself an attraction. Many visitors take a scooter specifically for this ride.
The dirt roads
The dirt roads to Vatses, Kaminakia, Vathy and Panormos are genuinely rough. Not dangerous if you drive slowly and carefully in a proper 4WD — but they will damage a regular car's undercarriage and are genuinely impassable after heavy rain. Proceed slowly. Use low-range 4WD if your vehicle has it. Do not rush.
Licence requirements
- Car: Standard driving licence (any country). Minimum 1-2 years driving experience typically required.
- Scooter up to 125cc: A1 motorcycle licence or car licence (in Greece, B licence holders can ride 125cc scooters).
- Scooter 150cc+: A2 or A motorcycle licence.
- ATV/Quad: Car driving licence sufficient for most ATVs up to 50cc; larger ATVs may require A licence.
- Minimum age: Usually 23 for cars, 18 for scooters.
